NFRN Adopts Meshtastic and the SoCal Mesh Configuration

Meshtastic is an open-source, off-grid communication platform that allows anyone to send secure text messages and share GPS coordinates completely without cell service or internet connection. By pairing a low-power LoRa radio device to your smartphone via Bluetooth, you create a resilient, peer-to-peer network. Every active device acts as a repeater, passing encrypted data along from node to node to extend the total transmission range across vast distances.

The Core Tech: Frequencies and Benefits

Unlike traditional ham radios, Meshtastic requires absolutely no licensing, fees, or tests to operate.

  • The Frequency Band: It utilizes the public 915 MHz ISM band in North America, which is fully legal under FCC Part 15 regulations.
  • Extreme Efficiency: The system relies on LoRa (Long Range) technology, consuming so little power that nodes can run indefinitely on tiny solar setups.
  • Maximum Reliability: Because there is no central server, the communication network cannot “go down” during natural disasters, power outages, or cellular grid overloads.

To maximize our community resilience, the Newberry Friends Radio Network is officially adopting the standardized configuration from SoCal Mesh. This unified framework links San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties, dynamically routing data across a massive regional footprint that stretches from the Pacific Coast all the way to the Nevada state line.

Because our physical location sits right on the essential shipping and travel corridors of the Mojave, the NFRN nodes serve as a critical communication bridge. We provide the vital data link connecting Barstow, Baker, and Ludlow. Without our community’s hardware filling this desert gap, off-grid signals passing through the vast valleys would simply drop. By deploying your own home or mobile node using the regional standard, you directly help secure this massive cross-state network footprint.

This off-grid network isn’t just for emergencies—it is a vital utility for everyday desert life:

  • Off-Roaders: Stay in contact with your base camp, track trail vehicles via live GPS, and coordinate recoveries deep within the OHV areas where cell reception is non-existent.

Features of Meshtastic

There are several advantages of Meshtastic over traditional radio communications.

  • Portability: Meshtastic devices are small and lightweight, making them ideal as portable radios.
  • Privacy: Privacy is built into the Meshtastic firmware.
    • Location: Public Channels limit location precision within 1000 ft. Private Encrypted Channels allow within 5 ft.
    • Encryption: All Direct Messages over the Mesh are encrypted. This cannot be turned off.
    • Private Channels: Unlimited user defined channels, allow for private group texts through an encrypted channel.
  • Remote Configuration: Over the Air (OTA) configuration of nodes by up to 3 designated nodes, anywhere within the Mesh
  • NFRN Management: NFRN can manage and remotely configure your radios for you.

To ensure a fully compatible and optimized connection with the rest of the desert network, all local NFRN users should configure their hardware to match the following:

  • LoRa Preset: Set your module to LONG_FAST with the preset configuration to optimize the signal for the sparse, open desert terrain.
  • Primary Channel 0 Name: Set your Channel 0 Primary Channel Name to LongFast with the key set to AQ==
  • Hop Limit: Adjust your device settings to 7 hops to guarantee messages can travel the maximum distance through neighboring mountain relays.
  • Home Stations: If your base radio has a poor line of sight or cannot reliably repeat packets, change its device role to CLIENT_MUTE to keep airwaves clear.
