Exploring the Radio Spectrum

From HF to microwave, our members bring practical experience across the RF spectrum.

Frequency Range Overview

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) organizes the radio spectrum into defined frequency ranges to ensure that communication services worldwide can operate without interference. By establishing these ranges, the ITU provides a common framework that allows broadcasting, aviation, satellite links, mobile networks, and emergency services to coexist efficiently. Each range is identified by its starting and ending frequencies and grouped into bands with unique propagation characteristics and practical applications. This structured approach makes it possible for governments, industries, and radio operators to coordinate effectively and “speak the same language” when planning and using frequencies. Below, you’ll find an overview of the ITU frequency ranges, showing how the spectrum is broken up into segments, each with a description and a link to explore the specific bands within that range.
